I forgot to mention. Yesterday I replaced the 12v battery as it was still the factory original battery. I suspected it might be on its way out, and may be causing the ECU voltages to be too low.
But even with a new Varta battery, and the battery change procedure in PIWIS, the same faults and symptoms remain.
